Neovim, a code editor in the terminal

alberto avatar Alberto Sola · 3/8/2024

This week I came across Neovim, a text editor that allows you to program from the terminal. Let me share my experience with you. I'm increasingly drawn to simple things in all aspects of life, and the world of computing is no exception. That's why I often use Zed as my editor, or if not, my trusty Visual Studio Code.

Neovim caught my attention due to its simplicity, and I was encouraged to give it a try. To be honest, it has pleasantly surprised me, and I've been using it for a few days. However, I've found that to truly take advantage of it, you need to study how the ecosystem works: shortcuts, plugins...

Yes, it has a plugin system, and you can even program your own using LUA. Nevertheless, configuring this entire system, in addition to researching the plugin system, has made me not use it for now, as it requires time that I prefer to dedicate to other things. Anyway, I'm leaving this chapter open until I can dedicate an entire day to studying Neovim and being able to test it in depth, or until someone launches an "installer".

In any case, I encourage you to give it a try.
