The future of programming using AI
With the recent surge of LLMs in the world of artificial intelligence, the position of programmers is being put in jeopardy, or at least that's what I read on Twitter: it's a position that will disappear and/or jobs will be lost.
This new tool (LLMs like ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) which in my opinion is very useful and allows me to be more productive, it's true that there may be lower-level positions that are lost, but in general, there will always be a need for people to think about what needs to be solved and why, and to do so effectively with or without AI.
What I am clear about is that, although I started programming from a young age, my goal has never been to program, whenever someone asks me "what do you do?" my answer has always been the same: solve problems and add value to others.
And this is what I like to do now, create products using "any" tool that allows me to solve the problem while adhering to my principles: quality, speed, and privacy, and tell you about them on this blog, on Twitter, and on YouTube, because it's fun for me.
As for what will happen in the future, none of us is capable of predicting what will actually happen. In my opinion, there can be three alternatives:
- Option A. AI evolves more and more to the point of being a true revolution that changes the rules of the game of the current world.
- Option B. It remains as a very useful tool, like when Google appeared, which allows us to be more productive, or so many other "revolutions" that have stayed there.
- Option C. The current bubble passes and we forget about it until in the future there is a new evolution and we move to points A or B, because I am convinced that this will happen at some point in the future.
How long will it take until this happens? Well, I don't know, I think it will happen sooner rather than later but it doesn't seem to be in the short term for various reasons.
In my case, I think that in the future instead of programming we will guide an AI, or if a singularity as proposed by Neumann occurs, everything will be much more automated and we will take a back seat.
As the Stoics say, the only thing that exists is the present moment and we cannot nor "should worry about what will happen in the future," although we can anticipate and prepare by regulating the use of AI, Robots, and how this would affect society.
Until then, I will continue walking my path, learning, adapting, and welcoming with open arms the new tools that emerge and that truly contribute to my journey of solving problems, which has always been my hobby, as well as developing skills in other areas that I have always liked.
So as I say a lot lately, let's enjoy the journey.
